A journey through Auchenai Crypts
So it’s only been a few days since my successful completion of Auchenai Crypts. Things started out grand, as we had a 65 warrior tank (me), a 65 Priest healing, another 70 warrior for DPS, a 64 warlock and a 64 rogue. We started out thinking it would be a cake walk. …oh how we were wrong.
We all get to the entrance and finally all admitted it would be our first time running the instance. Now the lvl rank on the instance is 65-68 or something along those lines.
Not only did we wipe upwards of 5 times, we accomplished this feat in the first pull before we figured out how best to get going. The problem with MOBS in the Auchenai Crypts is that for everyone 1 mob you pull 2-3 non elite mobs are summoned. So you do the math. Pull 1 mob fight 3 mobs, pull 2 mobs fight 6 mobs; pull 3 mobs fight 9+ mobs. To many mobs for 5 people to handle. If it wasn’t enough the non elite mobs like to possess member of your party.
Being possessed is fun, it’s sort of like having your account hacked while you’re still playing it and watching as you tear into your party blowing all your cool downs (great idea wow developers). The problem is you can’t break the casting of a mob channeling the possession spell. This leaves you with a limited number of options. One, you can try to kill the mob before he gets the spell off…this is kind of tough if everyone is not on the same page…but it can be done. Two, you can kill the player that has been possessed, which isn’t to bad if it’s DPS, it sucks if it’s the tank or the healer. Three and what we found to be the most effective, CCing the player who was possessed. This usually meant the warlock would fear the possessed player.
What eventually started working for us was for the rogue to CC one mob, I would then pull the non frozen mob as far back as possible making sure to hold agro on the Elite mob. The rest of the squad took aim at the non elites. They could usually wipe them before the first Elite broke from the CC. At which point I would make sure to meet the new elite and pull agro on him, again while the group wiped up the non elites. I of course would pull non elites off of the healer and other members but my main focus was the two elites. Once the non elites were done the rest of the group would come and finish off the elite mobs.
We were able to continue with this song and dance all they way up to the first boss. We wiped 2 more times getting there as we had someone get feared into 2 more mobs and someone was not paying attention to where they were walking in one case.
The first boss is basically damn hard. Does a fair amount of damage and does it fairly quickly. In addition to that the closer you are to him the longer your casting time takes, he shoots large fireballs and is an all around pain in the ass. After one rather quick wipe only getting him down to 26% we came back and creamed him…I guess it would have been smart to use a master healing stone the first time…and I did have to use my 30 min tank cooldown.
At this point the group went south with only myself and the healer wanting to stick around. We were able to get a quick group adding a 68 shammy, a 66 warlock, and a 66 paladin and finished the rest of the instance only wiping one time on the way. Needless to say there is a group of none elite skeletons in the last boss’s room. They are not like the skeletons in other instances that turn into dust with a simple AOE. Our lock and paladin figured they could make quick work of them and we pulled about 20 skeletons and only 2 elites…and wiped in about 3 seconds.
But that was it the last boss was simple and consisted of me tanking everything, but because there are only a few bosses that come out at a time it proved pretty simple.
Kick ass Tank PVE trinket in there as well that I won. Gives back 900HP for every kill you have with only a 2 min cool down.
Now when I pve to lvl I can kill one mob get 900 hp back, then kill another and lose about 500 hp then kill another and get back 900 hp. I do a lot less eating now
To date the Auchenai Crypts have been the most difficult instance I’ve had to endure.
